General Discussion / Sunrise Beach VFD Tournament on LBJ
« on: March 27, 2017, 01:42:58 PM »
Sunrise Beach VFD approached me a while back about information on holding a bass tournament on LBJ as a fund raiser for their fire department. After talking to them and giving them some info on what they needed to do I volunteered to use the TABC scales and be their weigh master for the tournament. I gave them a sample of rules and they took it from there and advertised their tournament. This last weekend was the tournament and they did an excellent job of organizing it. They had a perch jerk and over 100 kids showed up for it and everyone seemed to be having a lot of fun. They also had TP&WD bring out their trailer with the Hall of Shame and 2 Game Warden to support it and talk to the people about how important it is to abide by the states hunting and fishing laws. The tournament only drew 23 teams but was a good start and I suspect that next year they will draw more teams. The big bag weighed in at 22+ lbs and had a Big Bass of over 7 lbs. I plan to assist them again next year if they need me and they have decided to do a fall tournament because they have so many activities in the spring that it makes it difficult on their sonsors. I want to Thank John Morgan for his help with this event. I could not have done it with out his help. Everyone keep an eye out for this tournament next October and come out and participate for a good cause. Don't forget you never think about a fireman unless you need one and this is an all volunteer operation.

Annual Tournament / Re: State Tournament results coming soon
« on: September 30, 2015, 12:46:04 PM »
Ok, you would know it being my first year as President that we would have some issues with the tournament results. Some how when they printed the results and gave me a copy to announce the winners the copy that I received some way had dropped one of the top 6 teams. Well it took a little time but we got that resolved at the convention center and got most of the trophies where they belonged. Then I received an email yesterday that another clubs weights were wrong and after some checking found that for some reason the program did not add Sunday's weight to Saturday's weight so it only showed Saturday as their total weight. Well, I got that changed and sent the club a new results file and asked Perry to correct the web page. If anybody finds any other errors please let me know and I will research and correct it as needed.
On a happier note I want to thank Zapata Marine for a job well done. On Saturday we had a boat in one team tear up his lower unit. He carried the boat to Zapata Marine for repair and they had him back on the water Sunday morning. This business went above and beyond for our anglers so if you are there and need work support this business.

Annual Tournament / State Tournament results coming soon
« on: September 29, 2015, 05:47:22 AM »
The results of the State Tournament should be posted soon. I know that the results were on a lot of peoples minds because I got at least 4 phone calls Monday before I even got home. I texted Debbie and had her send me and Perry Orne a copy of the results and emailed them out to your clubs contact person so if you can't wait until Perry gets them posted call your club contact and have him send you a copy. This was my first year as President and organizing the tournament and I must admit it was a challenge. But all in all I think things went pretty well. We had a little difficulty with the weigh in until we got it across to the Zapata High School JROTC kids that the weigh slip, angler, and fish had to stay together. After that things ran smoother. Of course that drenching down pour that we had Saturday just before weigh in time didn't help. I don't think I had a dry spot on me until I got back to the motel and changed clothes. Also no clouds and the humidity Sunday didn't help either. I want to thank all my help at the tournament for the job that they did. They are what made this tournament run. I also want to thank Zapata High School and their JROTC Unit, They have a great bunch of kids and they also helped make the weigh in run as smooth as it did. I was a little surprised when they all showed up. I was told that I would get about 6 to 10 kids, but there had to be close to 25. I also want to thank the Zapata County Commissioners Court for the donation that paid to put this tournament on. With out their help it could not have taken place. I also want to thank the Zapata County Sheriff's Department for their help directing traffic and keeping watch over the boat ramp while everyone was out fishing. Hope to see every one next year at Livingston

Yes, your Club contact should have received a copy of the rules for Falcon. What club are you with and I will get Lynn to send you a copy.

General Discussion / Re: Another update on Ed Calderone
« on: April 21, 2015, 02:57:42 PM »
Talked to Ed yesterday and he is doing better. He said he has good days and bad days but yesterday was a good day. They were to do one more test today and then they would decide if he was strong enough for the surgery. I got a text from Mae this morning and they were still waiting for the results on the test and haven't heard anything else yet. Keep Ed and Mae in your prayers because this surgery is a very serious operation and Ed will need a lot of help. If the surgery is successful Mae says that he will be a totally different person. I could tell from his voice yesterday that he was tired and ready to get all this over with and get back home. I think he has been trying to check his self out of the hospital every day since they put him in at Beeville... lol

General Discussion / Another update on Ed Calderone
« on: April 17, 2015, 06:22:16 AM »
Just talked to Mae and Ed is being transferred to St Luke's Hospital in Houston some time today or tomorrow. As soon as they can get him there he will be scheduled for surgery to replace his aortic valve. Hope I spelled that right. She will keep me posted on when this happens and I will try and put something out both here and in email. With Ed going to surgery we all need to pray even more for him to pull through this situation.

Ok, I talked to Mae this morning and she told me that ED is doing better, he is still critical but is doing better. Right now they are trying to get him to a point where his condition is improved so that they can do surgery. He is still having fluid build up in his abdomen and it is having to be drained off to allow him to breathe easily. From what she told me he is not a good patient. He is on a fluid restricted diet so they have to track every ounce of fluid he takes in and he has an ice bag on the back of his head and is sneaking ice out of it when he gets thirsty. I've always been told that Doctors make the worst patients, well now they may have to move the Doctors to the second worst patient position... lol
Keep praying for Ed and his family. He may be doing better but he still has a long way to go.

General Discussion / Update on Ed Calderone
« on: April 10, 2015, 04:15:46 PM »
Well, I heard this morning that Ed is doing a lot better. Good enough that he is being scheduled for surgery in a few days. I guess that this is proof that prayer works. Ed was not in good condition when they got him to Victoria. I have tried to call to check on him a couple of times but his phone just goes to voice mail. Continue to pray for Ed and hopefully we will see him again soon.

General Discussion / Update on HB1979
« on: April 09, 2015, 04:12:35 PM »
I have just been informed that HB 1979 is going to a public hearing for public comment. Anyone that can attend this hearing and speak needs to attend. The hearing is to be held on April 14th at the Capital building in Room E1.010. I have been told that there is not a lot of parking around the capital so you probably will need to park in parking lots that are several blocks away. It is recommended that you get there early and if you are going to speak you need to sign up to do so. We need to stop this bill from passing. We have some of the best fisheries biologists in the nation and this should be a fisheries decision not a legislative decision.
Thank You

General Discussion / Ed Calderone is in the Hospital
« on: April 08, 2015, 08:07:07 PM »
Just heard from Ed Calderone's wife Mae that he is being transported to the hospital in Victoria and she is asking for our prayers for him. He had fluid build up and kept refusing to go to the Doctor until it became a crisis condition. Please keep Ed in your prayers as he and his family go through the crisis.

President's Blog / House Bill 1979
« on: March 27, 2015, 05:14:35 AM »
I have emailed out a letter from Randi Wayland with a document attached expressing opposition to HB 1979 to all board members and club contacts. This bill is asking the state legislature to make an exception to the state length limit for a special group of fishermen. This type of decision should not be legislated but should be based on science. This is something that a state biologist should decide after studying the fishery. We have some of the best and brightest in the Texas Parks and wildlife Department and we need to let them do their job. If this bill passes then what organization or individual will be next to want to legislate preferential treatment on some other regulation or law. The state of Texas already has special length limits on many bodies of water throughout the state, but these were set by the TP&W department based of studies and shock survey results. Lets let our biologists do their jobs and leave the politics out of our fisheries. Here is a link to find your representative. http://www.senate.state.tx.us/75r/Senate/senmem.htm and http://www.capitol.state.tx.us/Members/Members.aspx?Chamber=H
